Reflection assignment on your cognitive styles and learning strategies

Which cognitive styles do you think you have? Give some examples to illustrate your points. In what ways do you think possesssing these specific leaning styles has a positive impact on your academic and private life and in what ways do you think it prevents or challenges you in your academic and private life?

2. Using the list of learning startegies (see pages 125-126 in Chapter 5 of Brown (2000) and communicative strategies (see page 128) in Chapter 5 of Brown (2000), describe examples of two or three that you have already used or you are currently using. Pick one or two that you don’t use very much and provide your reasons for not doing so.

  1. 1) Among the meta-cognitive strategies I use planning and I like making an outline of what I will do all the time, which gains time for me because if I know what I'll do it also make me feel confident about the task. In congnitive strategies, I use repetition that helps my learning, grouping that provides me to memorize easily, notetaking that helps me to remember major points and imagery. These strategies have positive effects on my learning experiences, but imagery has sometimes become a drawback for my abstract learning experiences.

    2) In communicative strategies, I generally use circumlocution, nonlinguistic signals, and approximation. But I don't prefer using code-switching because I try to not to get used to using a Turkish word while speaking English. I will be an English teacher if I use Turkish in my classes they will do so. Therefore to avoid this situation, I don't want to use this strategy, but I prefer to describe what I want to say or paraphrase it. As a last choice I use mime and gesture as a communicative strategy.

  2. 1)I use meta cognitive strategies intensively in my learning.Especially, self monitoring and self assesment.I try to making plan for learning and thinking about the learning process. These are helpful and simplifying elements of learning process. To be able to monitoring your learning and comprehension is also very important learning experinces. So I try to do it as well.As cognitive strategies, I use generally making groups, keywords, deduction and especially repetition. These strategies help me to facilitate the learning process. But not-taking strategy is the least one which I use.
2)In communicative strategies, I usually prefer using code switching, approximation, translation and especially word coinage.Time gaining strategies are also important. We need to use them in communicative strategies. As my friend Şeyma, I use mime and gesture at least. However they are also effective. I want to use them.

  3. 2- among communicative strategies ı usually use avoidance and paraphrase when ı speak in english ı sometimes can't remember the word that ı should use in such cases ı avoid to speake actually ı can't say this works because you know by avoiding speaking we never can learn speak fluently. and sometimes when ı realy realy should speak and when ı forgat what to say ı try to praphrase what ı want to say of course this isn't always good because sometimes miscommunications take place. and ı can say that ı nearly never use transfer because ı think it is both useless and harmful because it is folse imput.

  4. I think I have a field independent style. I can break up an organized visual field and keep part of it separate, I can remember names easily, I enjoy discovery learning and individualized self-paced learning as features of this style. I am not a systematic thinker so I make impulsive decisions. Although I have mostly right-brain dominance characteristics; intellectuality, remembering names and controlling feelings are my features, also. Most of my caharacteristics do not affect me in a negative way. Because discovery learning, intellectuality or self-learning are the supported things in today's academic life. However, my impulsive decisions may sometimes lead some troubles. Once just because I do not like one of group memebers, I refused to go a knowledge contest.

2.Self-management and Self-evaluation are the most important metacognitive strategies which are also I used mostly. In my opinion, this era's language education system is all about individuals. I mean you have to do something personally and most important and basic steps should be these. I have some papers that I evaluate myself at the end of the every term. Among cognitive strategies, I use mostly repetition, grouping, imagery, keyword and transfer. I used to think that repetition is just an habit but then I realized that we have use repetition for certain aims. For instance; in act-outs, you have to memorize your lines and this is the best way. Imagery and keyword are the life savers in my education life. You can remember newly-learned knowledge with the help of these two strategies easily. At this point, I find translation strategy harmful and unnecessary bcause you will never give the same meaning with your native language.
In my view, communicative strategies are a little bit different from learning strategies. This time some oyher people or audiences are joining the process which makes it more interactive. Circumlocation and approximation are the two strategies that we used as esl students. This is expanding our word knowledge and making us use some passive words for the sake of communication. Nonlinguistic signals are again our life savers especially when you stick with the words in a conversation.I try to not to use code-switching and use of all-purpose words. We sould try to use the language as much as appropriately and we should be specific as much as possible as prospective English teachers especially in the speaking part.

  5. 1- ı think ı have a field depended style. ı always want to see the big picture or the whole map. rather than bring together the pieces ı'm good at cut the big picture into pieces ı mean ı'm better at getting over stuations by seeing whole picture. ı think this style has some negative effects on me because when ı can not see the hwole event or picture it is hard for me to get over. as pozitive effect of this style ı can say that ı feel comfortable and relive when ı see the whole pictule. and in my both education and normal life when learning ı like use keywords and making groups if is very helpful ı think to facilitate learnink of course when you forget the keyword it means you forget all the point as a desadvantage.

  6. 1.Among the meta-cognitive strategies I generally use planning because it make me feel calm, I know when and how I will do something. Without planning, I do not do my assingements until the last day and then I become stressful. Among cognitive strategies I use repetition and keywords, because I have the ability to forget very fast, so repetition helps me not to forgat and key words make it easy to remember, also.
2.In communicative strategies, ı generally use non linguistic signals. They become our saver when we cannot remember a word or express ourselves enough, but I do not use translation and code-switching, because using Turkish while speaking English is not so good. We should try to remember the English equilence of the word.Because the thing tou learn will be permanent if you struggle to remember it.If we use the Turkish one our brain will be lazy. The reason why I do not prefer translation is that English should be the other language not second language. If you are accustomed to traslation, you will begin to translate everything you hear and it will lead you not to understand fast conversations.

  7. 1.Among the meta cognitive strategies ı generally use planning and self assessment. these two strategies make my both private and acdemic life. this is because by planning ı can easily achieve what ı want. the planning issue sometimes may be a handicap for me. ı plan to do something but some unexpected things occur and everything might be spoiled. for self assessment, by this way ı can easily observe what ı did or not, how much ı hava achieved and so on. self assessment is in a way self criticizing. this is a good way of finding the right way while doing a task. teh only bad side of self assessment is that ı am being so harsh to myself sometimes and at these times it might be deterrent for me.
    2. Among these learning strategies ı prefer using keywords and repetition.By memorizing key words ı draw a schema of this word group. so when ı see the keyword ı remember generallythe whole subject. By repeating the key words ı easiliy again memorize them. the more input ı give to myself the fastre learning process happens. ı know that note taking is also good strategy but ı cannot do it. this is because my handwriting is notlegible and ı dn't like writing.

  8. 1. For cognitive strategies, I think I use deduction and imagery. In other words, I like certainty and I need rules beforehand, this always makes the work quite managable and easy for me. I rarely forget something I've seen. While studying my exam, I memorize the information as a page with even its number most of the times. It's as if I've taken a picture of the page, I remember the place of the sentences, if I studied enough. For the meta-cognitive strategies, I think I have selective attention. I just try to learn the point or the point that I may be asked in future and ignore the others. This one affects some of my exams. Some teachers tend to ask the smallest and the most useless details in their exams, and this forces me to make up new things improvizing my general information about that subject, in which I am quite succesful most of the times.

    2. For the communication strategies, I think I use "appeal for help" and "stalling" I can't give reasonable answer for using because I am not aware using those while speaking. I don't use foreignizing because as a prospective English teacher, it sound quite absurd.

  9. 1)Among the meta cognitive strategies, I use mostly planning. Before I start to do howework, I try to make a plan about when and how I will do it. After do this, I feel cofident and calm. Among the cognitive strategies I use generally keywords, grouping and repetition. In order not to forget these strategies are very useful.
2)Among the communicative strategies, I use some times code-switching and translation. I also use paraphrase, when I cannot remember the word which I will say.

  10. Among the metacognitive strategies I think I generally use self assessment and directed attention. Self assessment helps me see where I am and how it goes. If something is wrong, it is easier to start over or change my way. So it is a good thing for me for not to waste my time and do my best. For the directed attention, it helps me to reach my aim quickly. Before studying, I define what I studying for and what I am looking for. I ignore the irrelevant things slowing me down. The only bed side of directed attention for me is that sometimes I ignore tiny but important things because I think that it is irrelevant. Among cognitive strategies I generally use keyword, contextualization and note taking. They all help me facilitate learning process and best for the retention, but I don’t prefer transfer because using previously learned knowledge sometimes makes learning and remembering confusing for me.

2.Among communicative strategies I generally use avoidance. When I forget what to say or can’t find the word I generally don’t speak until I find the right word, but sometimes I use non-linguistic signals in such cases even if it is not the best way. I don’t prefer using translation; because it doesn’t provide the meaning that we want give. I think we should get used to think in target language. Only in that way we can stop translating.

  11. As a cognitive style, I think I am a kind of field independent person. I like to deal with the components instead of the whole picture of it.In the example of forest and tree, what I see or what I want to see is only some trees, not the forest. I am a part of the discovery learning. As to the impact of possessing a style, firstly it is important to know yourself, and when you have information about how you learn, then this makes it easier to learn. As a field independent person, possessing this style is benefical for me, for the activities involving analysis, specific attention for details, or any king of activity involving focus. But of course the work or the activity you are offered to do is not usually dealt with your own style. Some instructors may want, also do want us to deal with activities that require different styles. In that way you do not usually face with tasks that are just for you and that do not require what you don not have. As a cognitive strategy I usuaaly know the importance of planning. Although I dont usually make a written plan, my mind requires to know beforehand how I will do sth or what I will do. So, I am in the habit of maing visual plans in my mind.
2-As to the communicative strategies, I use circumlocution, code switching and especially approximation. I think I am good at finding an alternative way usually for something, so approximtion generally helps me to deal with the difficulties I face with an alternative meaning ı make up, with an alternative explanation as close as possible. What ı dont use and dont like is stalling and time gaining strategy. I dont like uttering words which do not in fact possess meaning suc as "I mean" or "ehh" or things. Instead, ıt is usually better to try to compose something meaningful.

  12. 1)I have field independence style.I can focus my attention on one thing no matter what type of interferences there are in the environment. I can read book in a noisy and crowded environment. This help me learn things more easily because I can focus on without being forced, but sometimes I have difficulties in seeing the whole part of an event. I stick to details. I have left brain dominance in some parts of my life but actually I think I'm a right brain user because I generally remeber faces of people, and prefer demonstrations and pictures instead of verbal instructions. However, I'm a planned and structured person most of the time.Sometimes it is bad for me because I can't find the expressions with demonstrations every time.
2)I use "directed attention" among metacognitive strategies. I decide my topic or which lesson I will study in advance and then begin to study. I focus on the learning task and then I forget about other things. I can ignore irrelevant events and can go on my study easily. The other strategy I use is note taking among cognitive stragies. I like note taking in a lesson or while studying to lesson exams. I think I can understand more esaily when I take notes because I reduce the amount of the information and work which I have to do. I don't use the strategy self-monitoring. I correct neither my own speech nor other speechs in prononunciation or grammer. I don't like it and I don't even pay attention to it.

  13. 1. I think I have the field-dependent cognitive style. I generally perceive the things as a whole and want to see the big picture first. Thus, sometimes I have difficulty in doing some activities which require detailed analysis. Besides, I am easily distracted by external factors like noise. As I have a social orientation, I like the lesson in which interaction and discussion takes place and I’m successful in learning things in this way.
I have left brain dominance, because I love mathematical information very much. This helps me to solve logical problems quite easily. I definitely like established, certain information, I hate elusive one, so I have difficulty in areas like philosophy. I prefer talking and writing than drawing.
I have a tendency for impulsivity most of my life. I give quick decisions or answers to questions and this feature causes me to make little errors. However, I also read fast, and this gives me an opportunity to gain time.
Lastly, I have a visual style of learning. I learn more easily by studying with charts, graphs and drawings. Sometimes, I distract my attention by listening lectures; this is a drawback for me.
    2. I use almost every cognitive strategy, but mostly grouping and note- taking are my favorites. Grouping the related items, really help me to easily understand them. Also note- taking provides me to see important points of the lesson by omitting irrelevant parts. I don’t use recombination very much, because I think it would take a long time to learn by constructing sentence. I don’t think it is a practical one.
For the communicative strategies, of course I use circumlocution most to define the meaning of the word. Also I use frequently approximation; when I don’t remember the word, I use the alternative one for it. Lastly, I use appeal for help, because instead of just waiting to remember what would you say, asking for the help from somebody is much more rational. I don’t use word coinage, because I love using certain information. If I haven’t heard such a word, I don’t make it up.

  14. 1)
I am a field independent person. I generally give a lot of importance on details. I collect all the clues, informations and details and then I create the bigger picture in my mind.
I am also right-brain dominant person. I don't like something which require analytical thinking. That's why I hate math and physics.
Besides, I love social sciences because they don't require logical thinking. Another thing is that I always listen to my heart rather than my mind. I am also good at remembering faces or visual items that I see only once.
I have a tolerance for ambiguity and it's important for language learning, I think. I can read sth even if it contains some words that are unknown for me. I focus on the meaning rather than single units. In addition, I can guess something even if there are some questions in my mind.
I am also impulsive person. I don't like to think much. Instead, I do immediately. This is the same with speaking. I don't think much before I speak, so I say whatever I want to. My friends generally say that "You're so frank." I think, this explains my hands are always up in the air during the lesson. I can't keep answering if I know the answer.
I am also fast reader. I read really really fast. It is so useful for me. In that way I can read a lot of book in a short time(:
I am also auditory learner. I can keep things in my mind if I hear it from the lecture or my friends. I am also addicted to music and I'm a singer. I think, this is also in related with being an auditory person and sounds are important for me(especially in pronunciation)
    2) As for learning strategies, I use selective attention and self-monitoring among meta-cognitive strategies. I generally try to use proper English while speaking. Pronunciation and grammar is important for me, so I generally correct myself if I make a mistake. I am also selective while listening. I listen to sth if it's worth to do.
Among cognitive strategies, sometimes I use translation. In these days, it happens to be vice-versa. When I hear something in Turkish, my mind immediately translates into English. I don't know why. I also use note taking a lot. I take short notes and write keywords and then I study.
Among socio-affective strategies, I use cooperation. I like group works. I also use questioning for clarification.
As for communication strategies, I use the words for all purpose such as do, take, want etc. I also use circumlocution while explaining something.
I hate doing it, but I definitely use code-switching. We use both English and Turkish at METU, so our mind,I guess, is confused with languages and we form some sentences which have both.
While talking, I use some fillers to gain time such as well, let's see, what else etc.

  15. 1) Among the cognitive styles, I generally use field independent style. It provides me to distinguish parts from a whole. Apart from this, I can concentrate on something even if in noisy places. I usually prefer places that are noisier to study or read a book. As a disadvantage of field independence is that I sometimes see only parts and pay attention to only them not being interested in relation to the whole. Also, I tend to learn better with deductive lessons.
I have right brain dominance, I remember faces easily rather than names. I don’t use planning or structuring, I prefer to be fluid and spontaneous. I usually decide depending on my feelings rather than thinking logically. I favor intuitive problem solving. I am willing to tolerate ideas that contradict my ideas, this shows my ambiguity tolerance. I am a visual learner; I prefer reading and studying charts, drawings, and other graphic information. I don’t use auditory learning; I don’t prefer listening to lectures and audiotapes, because it is difficult for me to learn via listening. Demonstrations and physical activities involving engaging bodily movement can also provide me good learning, and this shows that I use also kinesthetic styles during my learning process.

    2) Among the metacognitive strategies, I use selective attention. I decide in advance to attend to specific aspects of language input. Therefore, I can improve parts that I want to develop according to my deficiencies of the target language. Among the cognitive strategies, I mostly use translation, note taking and imagery. I use the first language as a base for understanding and producing the second language to learn better. Also, writing down the main idea and important points provides better understanding of the subjects. Besides, relating to new information to visual concepts in memory assist me to learn permanently and easily. I don’t use auditory representation, because retention of the sound for a word doesn’t affect my learning process in a positive way. Among the communication strategies, I use word coinage and approximation. Creating a non-existing second language word based on a supposed rule and using an alternative term which expresses the meaning of the target lexical item as closely as possible make me to learn new vocabulary items without facing any difficulties. I don’t use foreignizing, because using first language word by adjusting it to second language phonology can make me confused.

  16. 1.) I am independent learner in my opinion. I am generally good at identifying certain specific language elements within a larger context. In a text which has different grammar structures, I can identify each structure. I can distinguish parts from the whole. I generally like to pay attention to details and analyze while learning. I master the subject with exercises, drills.
2.) As for the learning strategies, I am dominantly a visual learner. I like to learn by reading because the whole learning process is under my control while reading. I can turn to the points I could not understand and read more than once, which I cannot do while listening. However listening appeals to me in some ways. If the lecturer is a master at teaching his or her subject, I like to listen in order to be familiar with the subject before reading.
Among the communication strategies, I prefer using topic avoidance, approximation, circumlocution while talking, I skip the topics I do not have enough knowledge. When I cannot find the target word, I use the approximation strategy. I use the closest word in meaning. I do not use word coinage because I can not be that creative while talking in front of people. For this reason I avoid using word coinage.

  17. 1. In cognitive strategies, I generally use grouping, note-taking and imagery. I group the materials I'm learning in order to acquire them easier. Also, in this way, I can reach the information I want quickly and without difficulty. Secondly, I take notes to remember the major points. This strategy is especially useful for me while studying for exams. Finally, I use the strategy of imagery to associate the materials I'm learning with something and so remember them quickly, but this strategy sometimes has a negative effect on my learning because it causes confusion.
    2. Among communication strategies, I usually use approximation, nonlinguistic signals and time-gaining strategies. These strategies help me to achieve the fluency in speaking. However, I don't use literal translation because I don't think it is a useful strategy. On the contrary, it leads to confusion for students because what they have as a native language and learn as a second language may be quite different from each other in terms of sentence structure, grammar and meaning.

  18. Among the meta cognitive strategies, I think I use planning, note taking and imagery. since I have visual intelligence, ı like to visualise things to have a relation between things. For example, I like to write down titles and subtitles of a topic in relation to each other and it helps me remember things as a image.
Planing is also very important for me. I like to do everyting in a planned way, because If I don't, generally everyting gets complicated and ı feel nervous.
Furthermore I have a field independeent style. ı can distinguish each and every detail in the structure.

Among the communicative styles, I generally use avoidance and pharaphrasing. When I don't remember a word, I stop talking, which I hate. Sometimes, ı try to say things in different way. In my oppinion, code-switching can work in non-native speakers who has the same native langugae, as it increases fluency and prevent nervousness.

  19. 1.In metacognitive strategies I generally use planning and self-assesment so that I can arrange my tasks in an orderly way and I feel more comfortable when I put my tasks in an order. And I can arrange my studying method via self-assesment so I can decide whether I need to study much more or it is enough. I use visualizing technique frequently as I can learn or recall things by their visual features and also I prefer grouping strategy. I can't define my self as field dependent or independent since it depends on the circumstances which I am in. I also use induction technique, I like it, as I find it like solving a puzzle. I am intolerant of ambiguity, especially while reading I cannot pass another stage without understanding a sentence fully. I am not a kineasthetic or auditory learner, I dont like listening a lesson from an audio based material, I like learning most by reading or visualizing. Sometimes I use imagery method but sometimes this technique confuse my mind.

2.Among communication strategies, I use approximtion, it generally helps me to deal with the difficulties I face with an alternative meaning ı make up, with an alternative explanation as close as possible. rarely I use time gaining strategy because those "fillers" distract my attention from the speech.Instead, ıt is usually better to try to compose something meaningful. I prefer using mimic and gesture instead of fillers when I get stucked. And Nonlinguistic signals are very important for us as EFL learners. I dont like code-switching but in an environment of friends sometimes I use English words for Turkish words when I couldnt recall ist Turkish counterpart. However if I were to be an English teacher, I shouldn't do it as a role-model for my students.
